How can you make homemade sour cream?

My parents just went to a farm and came home with a lot of milk, and they want to make some sour cream. Now ,I tried finding some ideas online but all require buttermilk? I dont know what that is? Are there any recipes that dont require this? How can you make homemade sour cream?
Buttermilk is the liquid leftover from making butter, then is left to curdle for awhile. You can make a type of buttermilk by adding a tsp of apple cider vinegar to a cup of milk, but its not quite the same. I make sour cream by just letting fresh, raw cream (from my cows) sit on the counter for about 12 hours. If your parents milk is raw, you can do that to, but if its been homogonized or pasturized, it won't work the same. How can you make homemade sour cream?

You have to find NATURAL buttermilk which has been made with a natural culture. Its not hard to find. Also you can search for online sources for cultures with which to make different dairy products. Once you have made a batch you keep it going. You use 1 cup buttermilk to make a quart but don't use it all up save a cup for the next batch. Here are some sources for cultures:New England Cheesemaking Supply
